Drugstore-priced lip palettes: ELF Cosmetics

I’m so intrigued by ELF Cosmetics because you never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes I’ll spend two dollars on a mascara and it’ll be absolute garbage, but sometimes I’ll spend a few bucks on a product and it will become my new go-to. ELF’s lip palettes fall somewhere in between for me. Though they’re not always the first thing I reach for, I do think they are pretty handy!

The Runway Ready Lip Palette, Runway Ready Lip Palette 2, and Iris Beilin Mis Amores Lip Palette are all $8.00 CAD and can be ordered from the ELF website. Each palette is roughly 6-7.5g of product and features a black compact case with a mirror, six lip shades, and a brush. Out of all of these, the Iris Beilin palette is my favourite simply because of the shade selection it includes. The orangey/tangerine shade  (second swatch from the right) is by far my most used and looks absolutely adorable.

The texture of these lip shades falls somewhere between lipstick and a lip gloss. They are fairly sheer and sticky, but can be layered to be slightly more opaque. Because they are so sticky they will transfer somewhat, but not too horribly. I found that after about three or four hours of drinking water and snacking in class that I wanted to touch them up.

I think that these have the potential to be a lighter look on their own, but also to be layered on top of more matte, opaque lipsticks for a bit of sheen and colour tint. The fact that the compact is small and thin, and the brush is small and actually works, makes it more ideal for travel or tucking into a backpack or purse than say the ABH Lip Palette which is massive and heavy. I haven’t tried mixing shades in these palettes, but I imagine that it would work just fine based on the texture and sheerness.

My least favourite of the lot is the Runway Ready 2 Palette. I always try and convince myself that I will wear pink, but I just never feel the urge.

In closing, if you want a sheer to medium opaqueness, want something you can travel with, don’t mind transfer or gloss consistency, and want something versatile and affordable, I would recommend these!
