Empties August 25/19: Biossance Squalane+Tea Tree Cleansing Gel, ELF Bounce Back Jelly Cleanser, and Essence Eyebrow Designer Pencil

20190825_120450

  1. Biossance Squalane+Tea Tree Cleansing Gel
    Rating: High-end Hero

My skin right now is probably the worst it has been in my life, or at least the worst it’s been since the really awful breakouts of my teenage years. I can’t vouch for whether or not this will help with acne as literally nothing is helping with my acne at the moment due to a chronic hormonal condition I am working on getting sorted out, but it did give a nice cleanse and minimized a bit of oil. I really like Biossance’s squalane-strong products. The only potential beef I’ve got with the product is the tea tree oil, as tea tree can be an irritant to so many folks. However, it’s not like they tried to sneak it into the formulation, it’s right there front and centre in the name of the product and prominently featured in the product description online. Though it didn’t help with my breakouts, I did enjoy it’s gel consistency and gentle foam, so I am going to mark it as a high-end hero.
  2. ELF Cosmetics Bounce Back Jelly Cleanser
    Rating: Bargain Beaut
This cleanser comes highly recommended from a number of skincare Youtubers I follow, including Gothamista. This is a non-foaming gel cleanser that I really enjoyed as a first cleanse to remove makeup. I found it to be fairly gentle, and enjoyed the strong coconut smell. For less than $10, I really can’t complain about it. The only red flag I noticed with my very limited knowledge in the ingredients list was the parfum. So, if you’ve got sensitivities to fragrance, just be mindful of that.
  3. Essence Eyebrow Designer Pencil in Dark Brown
    Rating: Bargain Beaut
I love most products that I’ve tried from Essence, and I wasn’t disappointed by this one. It retails for less than $3 Canadian, so even if you don’t end up liking this purchase, you’re still only out less than the price of a cup of coffee. It’s a soft pencil, had decent staying power, and I enjoyed the way it looked. The dark brown shade wasn’t too warm-toned, which is often the case with brow products. I think it is slightly less environmentally damaging as it is a wooden pencil that you sharpen, so the only waste is the small plastic cap and the thin plastic wrap it comes packaged in. Though not perfect or zero-waste, I imagine it is slightly less damaging than the plastic twist-tubes many brow products come in. The brush on the cap was the right balance of firm and soft, and I did end up using it a fair bit to smooth out and blend the brows after pencilling them in.

Project Pan April 2018: Check In #6

What I’ve managed to cross off my list:

  1. Maybelline Master Prime 300 Redness + Blur Control
  2. Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation
  3. Tarteist Contour Palette (mostly used, then expired)
  4. Laura Mercier Eye Primer Mini
  5. UD Naked 3 Palette (half used, then expired)
  6. Bare Minerals Mascara Mini
  7. ABH Brow Pencil
  8. L’Oreal Infallible Setting Spray

What remains:

  1. Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Concealer
  2. Sephora Brand Bronzer
  3. Becca Luminous Blush in Brushed Copper
  4. Rituel de Fille Ghost Light Luminizer
  5. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Mood Light
  6. Essence Make Me Brow

All in all, I’m making progress. I’ve had a couple of duds, but a couple of products have grown on me. I wasn’t the hugest fan of the Rainforest of the Sea concealer for awhile, but I’m beginning to like it again.

Outside of my goal project pan products, I’ve always used up these in the past week or so:

I don’t mind the Infallible setting spray, but the spray on it is a bit aggressive and can leave your face quite wet if you’re not careful. Young Living, as we all know, is trash, and I’m getting close to using up all of my old products of theirs. I think I’ve got about four bottles of essential oils left from them, and then I should be good. I recently learned a lot of terrifying information about the founder of YL that includes everything from false medical practices to drowned babies, and if even half of it is true, then I am even more embarrassed for having supported this company in any way. I adore how fluffy and smooth the OleHenriksen Transform Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer is! I nearly bought it to use as a night moisturizer today, but I opted for a product from my workplace instead (gotta love work discounts!). The Clinique pep-start sample moisturizer was pretty good, but Clinique does unfortunately test on animals so I avoid buying from them. The Biophora Light Hydration Serum was pretty decent, and I had no complaints! It didn’t really stand out to me, but it definitely got the job done.

Today I caved did a bit of Boxing Day shopping, but after today I think that’s it for makeup shopping until 2019. I’m excited and terrified to see how long I can last in a year-long no buy and how it will change my perspective on what I currently own, my social media consumption, my bank balance, and even my conversations with makeup-loving friends.

Some thoughts:

I am loving the glo-minerals pressed base. I’ve been wearing it nearly every day since I got it at work, and it has held up really well against my oily t-zone. Even on days like today where I was on my feet working in a hot, crowded store, only the smallest amount of oil poked through. It’s not as full coverage as a liquid foundation, but I find that pairing it with my tinted primer has been working really well lately as my skin has been somewhat clear.

I don’t give enough of a damn about my eyebrows to buy expensive brow products, so I have been finding a lot of drugstore brow products that in my opinion work just fine.

I love the pigment of Nudestix, their packaging, how they apply, and how long they last, but they are ever so drying. And of course once my lips start to dry, they start to flake. I still continue to wear them because I love the colour, I just put on a thick layer of lip balm first.

If there was a fire in my apartment, the first few things I would grab as I ran out would be my tortoise, my childhood blanket, my cell phone, and my Natasha Denona Lila Palette.
